MatGas, a center of excellence on CO2 born as a joint venture among Carburos Metálicos - Air Products Group, the Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas - CSIC) and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona-UAB) has initiated a Seminar Series on CO2 and related issues.

MatGas aims at contributing at different levels in the research and development of technologies for CO2 capture and utilization, working in the improvement of green technologies, friendly with the environment. The objective of this series of seminars is to acquire and divulgate a solid knowledge of the state of the art in the field of CO2 capture, utilization and energy issues associated to environmentally benign energy technology.

Several international experts on CO2 capture, sequestration, utilization and energy related issues (including hydrogen) have been and will be invited to participate at this series. Their expertise gives a broad perspective to the subject: from fundamental knowledge to well developed technologies. The complementary approach will enlighten the issues and challenges on this relevant topic.

The seminar series was inaugurated on December 2007. A list of invited speakers who already participated includes:

Short Bio

  Prof. José L.G. Fierro obtained his PhD in Chemistry in 1976 at the Complutense University of Madrid. In 1978 he was awarded with a staff position as Tenured Scientist of the National Council of Scientific Research (CSIC), at the Institute of Catalysis and Petrochemistry (ICP). In 1985 he was promoted to the position of Research Scientist, and finally to Research Professor in 1988. He spent postdoctoral stays at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris VI (France, University College Cork (Ireland) and the Université Catholique de Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium). His research activities include heterogeneous catalysis, environmental catalysis, sustainable chemistry, hydrogen and fuel cells technologies, renewable energies, synthetic and clean fuels.

He is co-author of 820 publications spread in prestigious journals, 8 books and 26 patents (six of them under exploitation). Recently, he received the awards of the Federation of Iberoamerican Societies of Catalysis, Senior research award "Miguel Catalan", Honoris Causa Doctorate from University of Patras (Greece).
