Dr. Lourdes Vega, MATGAS Director and R&D Director at Carburos Metalicos has received 2013 The Royal Spanish Society of Physics (RSEF) and the BBVA Foundation Award on Physics Innovation and Technology Award. The award recognizes applied research which has enabled technological innovation or promoted physics applications in the corporate world. In this edition the committee has recognized “the outstanding, original and creative way in which she has steered the theoretical and computational research in statistical physics, a branch of basic physics, to the industrial world, in which she has occupied important positions of leadership."

  • Co-funded by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (European Commission), the initiative reaffirms Air Products’ leadership in the hydrogen sector, its commitment to safety and the development of alternative energies. The project will run until November 2014.

XX, 15 November 2013: Nine European partners, including associations, leading companies, universities, technological and research centres have launched H2TRUST, a consortium formed to foster a smooth and well managed transition to the full scale commercialisation of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen (FCH) applications in Europe. In addition, the consortium will stress the importance of safety among all stakeholders. The project will be led by MATGAS, a joint venture between Air Products, the National Research Council of Spain and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, located in Barcelona.

One of the consortium’s main goals is to assess industry efforts to ensure FCH technology remains safe and that there is adequate regulation, hazard awareness, incident readiness and ability to respond to any public concerns. To ensure its goals are met, the consortium will meet regularly. Risk assessments will focus on each of the main application areas (hydrogen production, storage and distribution, mobility and vehicles, non-vehicles and residential power generation). The consortium expects that the results will help to create a long lasting culture of preventative safety in the industry, as well as a legacy of tools and knowledge that will reinforce best practice and public confidence.

“We hope that H2TRUST will help to accelerate the full scale commercialisation of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen applications in Europe, by providing accurate information to the public about the benefits of these technologies for a sustainable future,” said Dr. Lourdes Vega, Director of Spanish R+D Centre, MATGAS.

Hydrogen has several properties and, although it is most-recognised for its use in the aeronautics and space sectors, it is widely used in a variety of manufacturing processes. Hydrogen is used in refineries to convert heavy crude oils into cleaner-burning gasoline; in metal processors to reduce metal oxides and to prevent oxidation; in the chemical industry to synthesize compounds such as ammonia, and most recently in fuel cells powering ultra low emission cars, buses, locomotives, planes and even submarines.

-The overall objective of the SOFCOM Project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility, efficiency and environmental advantages of CCHP (Combined Cooling, Heating and Power) plants based on SOFC (Solid oxide Fuel Cells) fed by different typologies of biogenous primary fuels (locally produced), also integrated by a process for the CO2 separation from the anode exhaust gases. Scientific, technical and economical management of two proof-of-concepts of complete energy systems based on SOFCs are developed through the project. Several issues like high efficiency integration designs, impact of the fuel pollutants on the SOFC and fuel processing units operation, gas cleaning and carbon sequestration module are addressed. A first proof-of-concept SOFC system will be able to operate with biogas produced in an industrial Waste Water Treatment Unit (WWTU), while the second proof-of-concept system will be demonstrated considering a SOFC stack operating with a syngas from biomass gasification.

MATGAS is involved in the lab-scale analysis of the management and disposal of the removed CO2. This concerns capture, conditioning and use of CO2 to be used in water treatment in the same water plant from which the biogas is obtained. During this year we have evaluated the utilization of the CO2 in the treatment of wastewater; among the different opportunities detected, the removal of nutrients by growing microorganisms (microalgaes) was chosen as most interesting and promising and it is the one currently developed by MATGAS into the project. Three bioreactor (lab, bench and demo scale) for treating waste water has been designed, assembled and operated. A lab setup to grow microorganism to assist the research was mounted and microorganisms strain from biological pound was selected and successfully grow in lab. The demonstration trials are being developed in the Waste Water Treatment plant of Sabadell in collaboration with the Town Hall council in other to tune up the demo equipment, previous to its sending to Torino (Italy) to complete the project.

On October 24th and 25th, The SOFCOM Project Meeting will be held at MATGAS facilities in Bellaterra, Barcelona, including a tour to our laboratories. Also, a conference titled “Pressurised SOFC hybrid systems: near term or long term solution?" with invited speaker Prof. Fausto Massardo, Dean of Engineering School at University of Genova and research associate at Rolls Royce during last 15 years, will be held on October 25th.

A short video produced by Air Products on the occasion of the launch of the HyTEC project (Hydrogen Transport for European Cities) in June 2012 is now available online on Air Products website and on YouTube. The video highlights the benefits of the HyTEC project for the London city with the introduction of hydrogen powered black cabs fuelled by Hydrogen supplied from Air Products SmartFuel(R) Station located at Heathrow Airport.

Diana Raine, HyTEC project coordinator & European Business Manager - Hydrogen Energy  Systems, says  "The Hytec project brings together London and Copenhagen to expand H2 networks within these cities [...] and takes to the next level the vehicle deployment by creating a city wide network."
