Visual explainers for complex work.
Research on gases and materials is difficult to see. This page collects original visual material that explains the centre's work for journalists, students and partners.
The journey of a CO2 molecule
Carbon dioxide is not simply a waste product. It is a molecule with specific physical and chemical behaviour, and that behaviour can be used. The diagram below traces a simplified journey from a flue gas stream, through capture and preparation, to a material or process where the carbon is held or transformed.
Each stage has its own technical questions. Capture asks which solvent or solid binds CO2 strongly enough while remaining easy to regenerate. Preparation asks how the gas can be purified or brought to the pressure and temperature a process needs. Use asks whether the resulting product is stable, useful and preferable to the alternative when the whole life cycle is considered.
Images and reuse
The diagrams on this page were created for the centre. They may be used in teaching, reporting and noncommercial presentations with attribution to MATGAS. For commercial use, or for images of the laboratories, please contact the centre first.
We do not publish photographs of identifiable individuals without consent. Requests for filming or photography on site should go through the contact page.
For journalists
If you need background on a research line, a comment on a project or help interpreting a technical result, write to the general address and mark the message as press. Please include your deadline and the angle you are working on.
