Research review / 2026

Materials and gases, studied together. An independent centre for CO2, energy and clean processes.

Funded projects

Collaborative work with a defined question.

The centre participates in national and European projects that bring together industry, universities and research institutes. This page introduces the main programmes and selected projects.

Why projects matter

A funded project creates a shared timetable, a defined set of deliverables and a consortium with complementary capabilities. For a centre of this size, that structure is valuable: it allows a question to be pursued across several laboratories and with partners who bring expertise the centre does not have in house.

The centre's project portfolio has covered CO2 capture and use, hydrogen transport, fuel cell systems, biorefineries and the characterisation of storage rocks. The projects below are representative rather than a complete list.

National projects

BiorefineryPublic private consortium

BIOSOS

A sustainable biorefinery project covering the biomass value chain, from raw material to final products. The consortium combined industrial partners with research contractors.

National projects

CO2 storageGovernment funded

CIUDEN

Experimental characterisation of supercritical CO2 injection into storage materials at Hontomín, in the province of Burgos.

National projects

CO2 useCENIT consortium

SOST CO2

A large public private project on new industrial uses of CO2 with sustainability in view, led by Carburos Metálicos with research centres and companies.

National projects

EuropeanFP7 and consortia

SOFCOM, HyTEC and H2TRUST

European work on fuel cell systems, hydrogen transport and the sustainability and safety of hydrogen in cities.

European projects

Working with a consortium

If you are preparing a proposal and need a partner for gas separation, supercritical fluid processing, materials characterisation or life cycle assessment, the centre welcomes early discussions. The most useful first message describes the problem, the expected result and the timescale.
